A sleep medicine can come in many different forms, but by far the most used nowadays come from a family of drugs called benzodiazepines. Valium, for instance, is a the most recognized sleep medicine of this group, however recently Xanax is beginning to replace it as the main sleep medicine. Being the most popular does not make it the best by any definition. In many cases the pharmaceutical sleep medicine is ineffective, as well as has many negative side effects. The risk of addiction is always present with any prescription sleep medicine, as well as the risk of overdose to varying degrees. There are alternatives to overcoming insomnia getting to sleep, such as herbal supplements. A herbal sleep medicine will most likely be side effect free, and not have addictive qualities either. Trust in the healing power of nature and try a herbal sleep medicine before asking for a prescription drug.
Ativan, the generic name being Lorazepam, is a dangerous prescription drug which can severely damage the liver, doctors say. Even the lightest version of Ativan, that which contains only 1mg of Lorazepam, can have very negative effects on your health. Ativan is just one member of the benzodiazepine family which Valium, Lithium and Xanax also belong to. While the use of Ativan has shown moderate effectiveness in the treatment of anxiety and insomnia the cons of its use far outweigh the pros. The types of side effects it can produce are troubling, as well as the rates of people who become dependent and/or addicted to it. Long term use of Ativan increases the risk of liver damage and also amplifies the withdrawal symptoms when a person eventually tries to stop taking Ativan. Ativan works by inhibiting receptors in the brain, although its use makes the assumption that there is an imbalance in the brain. Herbal supplements and therapy are available for anxiety and sleep problems and should always be considered first.
Natural insomnia treatments come in many varieties, and if you are having trouble sleeping they should be looked at long before a pharmaceutical solution. Warm milk with honey may be all that it takes to deal with problems sleeping, other simple things like lifestyle and diet changes as well as making a more comfortable sleeping environment are also among the first steps you should take. This doesn't always work though, and that's why natural insomnia supplements were developed for sleep problems. With a combination of the most effective plants and herbs from around the world many of these natural sleep supplements are extremely effective, and without negative side effects. Prescription drugs often have a risk of addiction, dependency issues and can even cause overdose; natural insomnia treatments do not come with any of these. The other upside of natural insomnia treatments is that they are prescription free, meaning you do not have to book a doctor's appointment to get them (though it is still best to consult with your doctor or health care provider before starting any new treatments). Finally, natural insomnia treatments are commonly cheaper than their pharmaceutical alternatives, making them lighter on your wallet as well.
